Several news sites are reporting that Google is no longer offering Windows as an operating system choice to it’s new employees, and encouraging existing employees to migrate to a different OS. This shouldn’t be a surprise.
Firstly, Google is releasing it’s own operating system later this year, the Linux-based Google Chrome. Secondly, the languages that are most useful to Google Engineers are not the languages that are the easiest to develop with inside Windows.
So, while some might wish to see this as a strike against Balmer’s new empire, or a comment on the security of Windows, it’s probably more about Google wanting to work with open standards and compatible software.
As Windows moves towards a more locked-down corporate friendly mode for it’s latest release, and installing most of the open-source programming language beloved of Google engineers still takes several more steps than on Mac or Linux, it should be no surprise that Windows is less suitable for what Google does.
