Review: BBC series Virtual Revolution wraps up

The last part of BBC2’s, Virtual Revolution, examines how the web, and social networking especially, has changed our relationships. Titled, ‘Homo Interneticus?’, the episode contemplates the extent to which the web enriches or distorts humanity.

The series’ first episode’s somewhat forced comments about connecting and collaborating on a different level than ever before are presented again but are now given some flesh to their bones. The interviewees raise an array of interesting points that take the episode further in unravelling its arguments.

BBC app plans troubling commercial rivals

bbc_appsThe first BBC iPhone apps will be launched in April, the company announced this week.

BBC News app is first one on the launch list, followed by BBC Sport app in June – just in time for the Football World Cup. A dedicated app for the iPlayer is also in plans.

First made available to iPhone, the apps will shortly after be compatible with BlackBerry and Google’s Android based devices.

The introduction period of the series is clearly over and the third part manages to present interesting views and some real debate between the interviewees.

Titled ‘Enemy of the State?’, the episode focuses on the huge power the web hands to its users and weighs that against the dangers and responsibilities that come with the power. Although, “weighs” might be wrong word as the programme is still mostly presenting issues rather than analysing them in detail.

BBC and British Museum launch digital museum

The BBC, in partnership with the British Museum, is launching a large-scale “digital museum” to promote the upcoming BBC Radio 4 series “A History of the World in 100 Objects”, Campaignlive.co.uk reports.

Created by GT, the campaign features a “History of the World” site, which showcases a number of artefacts included in the radio series, that users are able to interact with.

bbcLike many media companies, the BBC already uses a cloud-like network of 48,000 servers run by Akamai. These cache and distribute content around the world from a server as close to the end user as possible. Tod Paoletti, director of product marketing at Akamai, believes that what he calls the company’s ‘cloud overlay’ will become more popular as video streaming goes to high definition.

“You need to be as close to the end user as possible for them to have a good experience, particularly of massive events such as President Obama’s inauguration speech, which saw the greatest demand on our network ever,” Paoletti says. “With the recent March Madness college basketball games, four in five viewers went for highdefinition. Media companies will struggle if they don’t move beyond their own servers in just one or two locations.”
